Biography

José Triay is a Mexican drummer originally from Mérida, Yucatán. He began his studies in classical percussion and drums at a young age, quickly standing out on the local scene.

 

At the age of 16, he began performing at jazz festivals and cultural events, supported by various groups in the region. In 2007, he obtained a scholarship to study in Mexico City, where he trained with prominent musicians such as Enrique Nery, Omar Guzmán and Aron Cruz.

 

Later, in 2010, the Jazz Fest Foundation awarded him another scholarship to further his studies with renowned teachers Antonio Sánchez and Rufus Reid. During his stay in the capital, he collaborated on multiple projects, which allowed him to tour the country and play in jazz clubs and festivals.

 

In 2014 he took his career to New York where he immersed himself in the city's vibrant jazz scene. There he studied privately with Michael Carvin, who became his mentor. His career has taken him on tours, recordings and clinics in countries such as Canada, the United States, Mexico and Argentina, sharing the stage with figures such as Misha Piatigorsky, Emily Braden, Miles Black, Fima Chupakhin, Marcos Toledo, Adrien Brandeis, Roberto Vizcaíno and Sean Drabbit, among others.

 

In 2019 he returned to Mexico, where he began to develop his own projects in trio and quartet format, collaborating with artists such as Rey David Alejandre. His musical approach combines the essence of traditional jazz with contemporary influences, exploring new sounds and performance formats.

 

Since 2023, José Triay has brought his talent to the most exclusive luxury hotels in Asia, starting in China and expanding to other countries in the region. Leading different shows, he continues to explore new horizons and leave his mark on the music and entertainment industry.
